Joseph P. Lenahan
Attorney Joseph P. Joseph P. Lenahan graduated with honors from the University of Scranton (1974) and St. Louis University School of Law (1977).
Attorney Joseph P. Lenahan began his legal career in 1976 when he served as a summer law clerk for Lenahan & Dempsey, P.C. In 1977, he began his employment as an associate attorney with the firm, and he has served as a principal with Lenahan & Dempsey, P.C. for more than twenty-five years.
Since 1980, Attorney Lenahan has focused on litigating complex civil trials, including cases which involve claims for professional (medical and legal) malpractice, product liability claims, complex commercial and insurance cases, civil rights and employment discrimination claims, environmental, occupational health exposure, and toxic tort claims, and cases involving catastrophic (brain damage, amputations, paralysis, head injuries, blindness, and death) injuries to adults, children and infants.
During his distinguished legal career, Attorney Lenahan has tried cases in Federal and State Courts. He has tried complex civil cases in the Federal Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Pennsylvania, as well as County Courts throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has been specifically admitted to try cases in both Massachusetts and Arizona.
Attorney Lenahan has been involved in numerous appellate cases over the course of his career, having appeared and argued cases in Pennsylvania's Commonwealth, Superior and Supreme Courts, as well as the Federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court, in matters as diverse as medical malpractice, civil rights, employment discrimination, personal injury, insurance coverage and domestic relations.Cases of Interest*
In 1983, Joseph P. Lenahan became one of the youngest attorneys ever to successfully argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. At age thirty, Attorney Lenahan won a unanimous (9-0) decision from the Unites States Supreme Court in Consolidated Rail Corporation v. Darrone, a landmark decision which protected the rights of handicapped employees working for government funded agencies. In 1993, Attorney Lenahan won the largest verdict for a Plaintiff with a single limb amputation in the history of the United States, in the case of Donahue v. Port, et al., which was a medical malpractice claim.
In 2006, Attorney Lenahan won a large personal injury verdict in Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona, where he had been specially admitted to try this month-long jury trial. The trial, which arose from a jeep rollover in the Sonoran desert outside of Scottsdale, Arizona, involved the presentation of twenty-five expert witnesses for a brain-damaged Plaintiff.Distinctions/Memberships
Attorney Lenahan has represented catastrophically injured plaintiffs, with a special emphasis in cases involving Birth Trauma. Especially in the last decade, Attorney Lenahan has successfully represented the families of numerous brain injured children and infants, all of whom required lifetime care for their catastrophic injuries. During that time, he has also successfully represented many adults who have sustained brain injuries, amputations and complete or partial paralysis.
Joseph P. Lenahan is a member of the Lackawanna, Pennsylvania and Federal Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania State Courts, and in the Federal Middle and Eastern District Courts of Pennsylvania, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
He has been certified as a Civil Trial Specialist since 1984, and he has received the highest professional ratings from his peers.
